I was thinking I’d start scanlating Gundam: The Origin. It seems fairly easy, and god knows I need the practice. I’ve already done most of volume 4, but then I heard about you and, well–the LAST thing I want is some DRAMA. If you don’t want me to, I’ll just do it for myself and not bother uploading it.
I’m not terribly competent with Japanese, but I feel like Origin has been sitting in limbo for so long that I’d give it a go and share my efforts.
School, but it was cleared up. The stories I’ve been posting were a portion of what I chose to do for my final project. You can work on G:TO if you like, I’m unsure as to whether or not I’ll be able (or be willing) to finish working on it. As forewarning, it’s pretty thankless, and people are more likely to criticize you for your stylistic choices than to thank you for taking an interest in the first place. Downloads are pretty low, but I imagine interest may have been spiked because of the supposed anime announcement.
I say do what makes you happy, but lets just say if the mood strikes me I’ll keep working, as I don’t pay attention to the “community” anymore.
Hm… I’d always been really hesitant about posting anything I’d done for school online, for fear of an accusation like that. For some reason, people really don’t seem to trust me. Must be one of those faces. Good thing it didn’t become too big of a mess for ya’!
Regarding The Origin… yeah, I know what you mean about the community. I tried translating a bit of Ecole du Ciel (which was REALLY HARD) and gave up on it because the community was so… ulgh. I pretty much avoid mecha/gundam forums/communities these days, either, partly because of that, so it’s not really an issue. I’m mostly just doing it for practice.
I wanted to read The Origin anyway, and my Japanese is bad enough that actually editing the text into English doesn’t actually take up that much more time than reading it straight…. I dunno, maybe it’s just a Gundam thing, but I find I have the most difficulty deciphering the various foreign (English) words written in katakana.
It also gives me an excuse to zoom in really, really close on the art. It’s easily the most cinematic manga I’ve ever seen… fantastic detail. I don’t know what the anime will end up being like, OVA or series or vapor, but I have a hard time believing it will do the manga’s imagery justice.
Uh, I’d like to raise my hand & say I’m one of those few readers. Sad to see both of you receive little thanks & even lower interest. I’ll be honest & say, personally, it’s time consuming to post on every scanlator’s website since I click on every interesting group on a manga release aggregator. Though that’s a cold comfort at best…. I do wish the community was being more productive in this effort for you two. It’d be nice to see a better response for this specialized task.
I hope both Fluwm & you keep up the hard work & retain enough readers to make the effort worthwhile!
I forgot to say: accusing plagiarism via the internet seems rather….retarded. When many people use aliases, particularly for this kind of work, I don’t know how they’d prove you were or were not copying unless they demanded information from wordpress itself. Then again, academia has issues all on it’s own. I guess it isn’t helped by the fact manga & people doing non-official translations aren’t mainstream. Sorry to see have to go through that….

Sounds like you know what you’re talking about! Ecole du Ciel is also a very good manga. Randomly, work on Origin has resumed on our end.
Really randomly. HD wipe, work lost, etc etc, but who knows, maybe we’ll pick up speed again.
